Durov called the goal of attracting more than $ 1 billion for Telegram

Pavel Durov confirmed that the Telegram messenger he founded raised more than $ 1 billion through the placement of bonds. The ultimate goal of the messenger is to become a financially sustainable project, he wrote in his Telegram channel.

He also noted that the funds received will allow the company to grow and maintain independence. In addition, the founder of the messenger intends to implement the monetization strategy he spoke about in December 2020 in the near future.

The entrepreneur sees the prospect of Telegram working for decades and even centuries in the future.

The fact that Telegram first placed its own bonds and raised more than $ 1 billion on the market became known in mid-March. The company issued a five-year convertible dollar bond with a yield of 7% per annum.

At the same time, it was noted that the minimum lot for participation was $ 500 thousand, the par value of one security was $ 1000. The first remuneration payment is scheduled for September 2021.

On March 23, the names of several of the largest buyers of Telegram bonds were disclosed. UAE investment companies Mubadala and Abu Dhabi Catalyst Partners have invested $ 75 million each. According to a Vedomosti source, the total amount of $ 150 million is the largest contribution to the messenger’s bonds.

Telegram plans to open a new office in Abu Dhabi, according to Reuters. At the same time, the headquarters of the messenger is located in Dubai.

It also became known that, together with Mubadala and Abu Dhabi Catalyst Partners, other global investment funds have also invested in bonds. In total, they bought 50% of Telegram shares. The rest of the messenger placed with funds and banks from Europe and Russia.

At the same time, data appeared in the Russian media that the Russian government also took part in investing in Telegram – through the RDIF. However, in a conversation with “Durov’s Code” vice-president of the company Ilya Perekopsky denied this information.

In his message, Pavel Durov did not give new details about the messenger’s transactions.

“Telegram has raised over $ 1 billion by selling bonds (in the form of debt) to some of the largest and most knowledgeable investors around the world,” he said.
